David Frum on Trumpocracy

My talk with journalist, author, and policy analyst David Frum. Mr. Frum is currently a senior editor at the Atlantic. From 2014 through 2017, he chaired the board of trustees of the leading UK center-right think tank, Policy Exchange. He’s served as a speechwriter and special assistant to President George W. Bush and as senior adviser to the Rudy Giuliani presidential campaigns. He’s also the author of nine books, most recently Trumpocracy: The Corruption of the American Republic.

In the conversation, we cover, among other things:

  • how Bill Clinton monetized the post-presidency
  • America as a toddler in heavy traffic
  • Donald Trump and punching babies
  • the ‘neither ethical or smart’ Trump administration
  • Congressional leaders enabling Trumpocracy
  • whether the American political system can handle the Trump presidency

You guys need to get out of your bubble. I listen to your other show , The Politics Guys, as well as other shows that claim to cover both sides, KCRWs Left Right and Center for example. Yet never have I heard a full throted Trump supporter.

I guess you think they don’t exist or something and you continue the losing tactic of referring to the half of the electorate that voted for the President as clueless idiots, and smugly congratulating each other on your wisdom. It gets old Michael, and you are drifting farter and farther into abstraction while you completely ignore reality.

A member of the working class does not need a college degree to point out to economist that there is a difference between theory and practice. Most Americans have zero net worth and are 30 days from financial ruin. The real question is whether the so called intelligentsia is incompetent or corrupt.

I would characterize the last election as a rejection of the Technocracy. An event that has provoked zero introspection and an avalanche of misdirected blame.

    Carry on.

We’ve actually had two pretty strong Trump supporters on The Politics Guys – one was one of my oldest friends, who made a case for Trump both before the election and one year later. The other was conservative pundit Kurt Schlichter.

I’ve actually reached out to numerous Trump supporters, but not a single one has agreed to talk to me – in fact, not a single one has returned any of my email requests. I’m trying to talk to them, but all I can do is ask – accepting or not is up to them. It’s a great frustration to me, because I would absolutely love to talk to someone from, for instance, American Greatness.

In short, I absolutely agree with you in your dismay that some on the left seems to believe that Trump voters are clueless idiots. I completely disagree with some of the smug self-satisfaction I see on the left.

Thanks so much for taking the time to comment!
